Raised on Sugarloaf key I have been fishing the waters of Key West and the lower keys for over thirty years. I mainly fish the Back-country which includes Flats, Bays, and the Gulf of Mexico. the Backcountry offers calm protected areas to fish and favorite species include Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Barracuda, Sharks,Cobia, Snapper,and Grouper. depending on the time of year you will encounter other species such as Pompano, Ladyfish, Trout, Redfish,and Snook. these fish are generally found here during our winter months. During spring and summer months i will fish the Atlantic, where spawning Permit or Mutton snapper congregate around deep structure. This time of year is typically calm and fishing offshore and near shore (reef) becomes very productive and enjoyable. Here in the keys we are very fortuate to have such a diverse fishery. other fish to consider are Jacks,Goliath Grouper,Mackeral, Blue fish,and Dolphin fish to name a few.
